In October 2022, the Elk Valley Nordic Society hosted the 6th annual Great Fernie Pumpkin Hunt. For the event, the organizers chose the Community Energy Association’s Voltstack 30k Mobile EV Charger – the first one we built – to provide silent, emission-free power for their food and beverage services.

The Solution

During the Great Fernie Pumpkin Hunt, the Voltstack 30k mobile battery energy storage system was operational for about eight hours. In addition to powering food and beverage services, the clean energy mobile power station also kept some audio-visual systems running.

“We’ve used the Voltstack 30k for a few different applications and at every use case, no one believes it’s on and delivering power,” says Megan Lohmann, Deputy Executive Director at CEA and President of the Fernie Nordic Society. We’ve been hearing about the disbelief in silent, emission-free power stations for a while. This video by Netflix perfectly captures a boom operator’s incredulity upon learning that the unit is active. In order to help people understand what the Voltstack is and how it functions, Danielle puts out a sandwich board at every Voltstack-powered event. “We named the unit Gene and when it’s in action we always have some informational material alongside. This gives people the opportunity to learn more about the technology while they see it working and notice the benefits. We’re so accustomed to noise pollution that when an event space doesn’t have background generator noise or exhaust fumes, there’s this ‘aha’ moment for folks – it’s so quiet! That’s what I value most about this technology.”

In addition to using clean power for the event, Megan drove a Ford F150 Lightning to tow “Gene” around. “In the early days, we towed the unit with a gas-powered truck because electric trucks were not yet available. Now that we have a zero-emission option in the F150 Lightning, we’re excited to showcase this clean technology pairing. It’s such a great opportunity to show people, especially in rural areas, that zero-emission technology is here, it works and it’s better. We’re looking forward to a summer full of “Gene” demonstrations that showcase just that – clean, quiet, possible!.”
